The Rotary Foundation

The sixth president of Rotary International, Arch Klumph, in 1917, proposed the creation of an "endowment fund for Rotary... for the purpose of doing good in the world... ."  The first contribution of $26.50 was received from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A.. In 1928 this had grown to more than $5,000 and was renamed the Rotary Foundation.  It is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions.

After the death of the Rotary founder, Paul Harris, in 1947, contributions began to pour in. Since its beginning the Foundation has received contributions totaling more than one billion dollars. During the year 2000-01, $73 million was given.  When one considers that these have all been voluntary contributions (none of the Rotary International dues goes to the Foundation) one has to wonder what has given Rotarians the vision that has resulted in this remarkable response.

That vision may have been generated, in part, from some of it’s many programs. International scholarships, provided by the Rotary Foundation, continue to be life changing experiences for young people.  Matching grants are providing food, clean water, shelters, education and health care, giving help to people where it is really needed.  Through PolioPlus, over one billion children have received the polio vaccine and are protected from this crippling disease.  The Group Study Exchange program has also had far reaching effects on the lives of it’s participants.  All of these programs have contributed to world understanding and peace.

It has been because of the passion of Rotarians who have caught the vision of helping others that the Rotary Foundation has been so successful.
